Local small businesses have been targeted in a scheme that involves telephone orders and phony credit cards.

Police say someone calls the businesses and places an order, providing a credit card number. Someone comes and picks up the goods, but a month later the owner discovered the cards are no good.

Business owners contacted in this fashion are urged by police to ask to see the credit card and verify the identity of the person who comes in to pick up the item.
