Arrest made in death of Washington woman

WASHINGTON - A Washington man is in custody for the September death of a 37-year-old Washington woman.

Carrie Maynard was found dead on September 9th near the Wood Street bicycle trail in Washington. An investigation into her death determined she died of heroin intoxication.

Monday, Washington Police arrested 23-year-old James "Cole" Brekke for drug-induced homicide.

Washington Police Chief Ed Papis says, "Every heroin-related death is preventable. As a community, as a state, and as a country, we are suffering needlessly. We ask that you reach out to anyone in need of help and that you support those that work to address addiction issues. It will take a broad and deep community response to stem this tide of tragedy."

The Washington Police Department, Tazewell County Coroner's Office, and Illinois State Police investigated Maynard's death.
